Bridge maintenance

Maintenance work on bridges helps to ensure their safe operation and durability. A majority of Finnish bridges are reaching the point where a full renovation is required.

There are approximately 15,160 bridges in the Finnish road network, and around 5% of these are in poor condition. A weight limit has been set for 180 bridges of these substandard bridges. The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency estimates that by 2020, around 7,000 bridges will require renovation. The number of bridges in poor condition has been slowly increasing, even though the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency has invested in renovation work.
